GSM Services wins 2016 Governor’s NCWorks Outstanding Employer Award

GSMServicesGSM Services is a third-generation family HVAC business that has been operating successfully in the Gastonia area for over 90 years. Brothers Steven and Joel Long head up the business, and both have become active promoters of the benefits of workforce development solutions. GSM Services Human Resources Director Donna Caskey after working with Gaston Workforce Development on solutions for GSM Services also accepted an appointment to the Gaston Workforce Development Board.

GSM Services embraces the vision of workforce development and community involvement in Gaston County. They were one of the first businesses to offer a NCDOL registered apprenticeship program in-house, allowing employees the opportunity to increase their skills and knowledge in the HVAC industry. They are active users of NCWorks Online, utilizing the system for recruitment and offering “On-the-Job” training opportunities as well. GSM Services is also actively involved with local workforce development for incumbent worker training awarded through the NCWorks IWG Program

GSM Services participates at monthly job fairs at the Department of Health & Human Services, as well as Career Expos in order to develop career pipelines for future workers. Additionally the company is connected with the school systems guidance counselors to connect young talent with employment opportunities.

When GSM Services was approached with the idea of Work Experience opportunities for Young Adults, the company took the initiative to go one step beyond by developing their own in-house Youth Training Program. Young adults are exposed to all areas of the HVAC/Energy Saver Industry. Every 90 days during the training, the job duties and assignments change. At the end of the WEX, Youth have the choice of a job opportunity as a Full-time employee of GSM Services.

Donna Caskey says “Our work with the Gaston Workforce Development Board and NCWorks Career Center has connected us with some great individuals and resources within this community that we would not know anything about otherwise. We offer a career, not just a job. Finding the right person for the right position is crucial. We’ve hired several individuals through our participation in the weekly job fairs. Getting to see people face-to-face really helps.” She goes on to explain that GSM Services is committed to offering individuals within the area a chance to build a career that supports their family and leads to a higher quality life for the individual and the area as a whole. “Our relationship with the Gaston Workforce Development Board is crucial. It’s a great fit.”
